Dr. Bukar Usman,
technocrat, creative writer, public policy icon, man of culture, quiet philantropist, and commentator on public
issues, hails from Nigeria.
Since retiring in 1999, from a glorious civil service career, as a director-general in the presidency, Dr. Usman has devoted
his time to researching and writing on African oratures. With four published books of short stories, sourced from the largely-forgotten
oral tales of his native Biu area in Nigeria's Borno state, already to his credit, Dr. Usman has deservedly emerged
as one of Africa’s best tellers of folktales. He preserves and enriches that fast-disappearing oral tradition through
his creative retelling of traditional tales for the modern audience. Whether he is conveying his stories in Hausa or English,
he maintains the simplicity, setting and moral lessons of the good old folktale. A truly multicultural man whose cross-cultural education, life, and work generally
reflect the public realities of his time, Dr. Usman has richly articulated his inspiring and destiny-moulding experiences
in his books, particularly in his autobiography Hatching Hopes. His literary and other contributions are liberally
reflected on this site. Bukarusman.com, thus, will interest many visitors across the world. Dr. Usman’s short story books, The Bride Without
Scars, A Stick of Fortune, and Girls in Search of Husbands have been translated into Hausa language. His
many awards include Nigeria's OON national honour and recognitions from many international and professional
organisations, such as Institute of Management Consultants, the Association of Nigerian Writers, Rotary Club, and Lion's
Club.
